On the way to Devil’s Tower, we stopped at this national monument. At first, I think we were all a little complacent about visiting. We milled through the visitor center and then headed outdoors and ran into an invigorating park ranger. He gave a 10 minute talk about what happened at the site. But what struck all of us was his passion for the subject. He patiently answered questions from everyone And then there was the way he worked with Zachary. He explained that he became very interested in this battle at about the same age as Zachary, all the way in Florida. You could tell he was attempting to embark that enthusiasm to him. Truly special.
We then headed up to the monument where Custard was killed alongside his men. Interesting fact, Custard was removed from this area and moved to West Point, although it’s hard to tell if it was actually him that was moved.
We headed over to the Indian monument where we learned about Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. And of the Crow Indians who served as scouts for the Seventh Calvary.
Even today, Indians consider this sacred ground. We ended our day by Devil’s Tower watching a movie, Close Encounter which was filmed here.
