Week in Rewind May 21

When does a hobby become an obsession? It really is no secret that mommy loves her flowers. It started as a small project in the front yard and has now expanded, well almost everywhere. So much so that daddy now says that I’m not allowed to buy anymore new ones. I took that restriction with a grain of salt. So when my current knock out roses needed replaced, I quickly thought, well technically these aren’t NEW. Rather, I’m just replacing some of my old flowers. Three Peonies later and my old knock out roses, certainly looked rather new.

Speaking of hobbies, I may have found a new one last week. I have long wanted a grandfather clock for the family room. When I saw one listed locally, I quickly jumped on it. Turns out, it wasn’t a grandfather but rather was a grandmother, a Daneker from the late 60s. Pretty cool history to that clock company. The Daneker Clock Company was owned by the Million-Rutherford Company and was located in Maryland. The owner inspired to be the best clock maker on the East Coast. So, he went to Germany to learn about clock making. The clocks are made with the finest wood, and each are individually unique. Unfortunately, the plant burned down in the 70s and they went out of business. We initially had it in the family room, but with our big ceilings it looked rather small. It found a new spot in the hallway for now.

That clock led to a search for a bigger one for the family room. I looked for over a week and finally found one in Elkton, Maryland. We went on an adventure trip Tuesday night and struck gold. This gentleman not only collected clocks but restored them. He talked us into taking two of his clocks. One that was in perfect working condition and one that he assumed needed minor repairs to the chiming mechanism. The best part, he taught us how to safely transport clocks by taking the brains of the operation out and then moving the case. So, we left with one of his clocks and need to make another trip to retrieve the other. Cool note, he had two really cool older clocks. One was from pre-war Germany, a 1920 clock. The other he found at an estate sale, not working. It is a late 1800 clock, hand painted face, and was a gift from the DuPont Family. It’s simply beautiful and he got it working. We were lucky to find him. And last night, he messaged to say that he got the other clock working. So, now I can have 3 clocks chiming at the same time. Who does it drive nuts first—place your bets now

And finally our biggest hobby of them all, collecting dogs. These two little stinkers underwent their snip snips this week. Reecie was a trooper. You could tell that she was a little out of it for a few days, but now has bounced back. As for JuJu….my JuJu, we can now proudly say that the one ball wonder has become a two bounce player…unfortunately for him, he’s now shooting blanks. The poor guy!
